My top 15 movies would be these(not from best to worst, I'd rate all of these 5/5). They all possess, imo, an excellent story, great acting and dialogue, an intriguing atmosphere and very rich, divergent ideas and details about the worlds they tell about.
Inception(2010)
Casablanca(1942)
The Matrix(1999)
A Clockwork Orange(1971)
Goodfellas(1990)
The Maltese Falcon(1941)
The Godfather movies
L.A Confidential(1997)
Inglorious Basterds(2009)
Sin City(2005)
Gangs of New York(2002)
Pulp Fiction(1994)
Memento(2000)
Doctor Strangelove(1964)
Fight Club(1999)
Apart from this list, I would consider Martin Scorsese, Christoper Nolan and Stanley Kubrick as my favorite movie directors. I love most of their works and their way to tell unique stories is astonishing. I also love old Film Noir and gangster movies.
As for TV shows, here we go:
Babylon 5. A long space opera epic with a strong but classic and slow storytelling. Lots of unique characters, strong character development, great OST, a blur border between good and evil, moral conflicts and hints to modern politics.
Game of Thrones. Intriguing story line and lots of political power struggles. Gotta love it.
Boardwalk Empire. A crime drama about famous gangsters of the 20's making their living by smuggling liquors and drugs during the time of the prohibition. Again a great story, unique characters and OST.
Marvel's Daredevil. Same as before: great story, writing and characters.
Extant. A science fiction mystery drama about androids and aliens.
